About the Album
On December 2017 was the launch "El Templo de las Ideas" ("The Temple of the Ideas"), the first studio album by the Pagliuca-Mena brothers. Pagliuca-Mena sextet is a project led by brothers Silvano (piano) and Angelo (drums); both young musicians from Maracaibo, Venezuela, but with a noteworthy trajectory in their city, as well as nationally and internationally for their work as live and studio session musicians. The album was completely produced by the Pagliuca-Mena brothers themselves at their studio, "El Cuartico", in the city of Maracaibo between the years 2016 and 2017. It also features the participation of six other great young musicians from Venezuela: Albert Mora (bass), Luis Alfredo "Luki" Zambrano (trumpet), Eduardo Vega (tenor saxophone), Francisco Arteaga de Pool (tenor saxophone), Nelson Pacheco (trombone) and Gregory Boza (trombone). Together with the Pagliuca-Mena brothers, they explore the borderlines between the Venezuelan, Latin, Jazz and Classical music in six of Silv's original compositions: "Ahora o Nunca" ("Now or Never"), a tune that with its sudden changes from salsa to swing reminds us that life is just once. "Yara", in Afro-Venezuelan style, takes us on an excursion through the tropical jungle and coast while singing an antiphony to a goddess of the Venezuelan syncretic religion, also knows as María Lionza. "Caribay y las Cinco Águilas Blancas" ("Caribay and the five White Eagles"), a waltz that pretends to recreate an ancestral Andean myth about the formation of the high mountains or peaks of the Venezuelan Andes. "Aura", a tune in 12-bar blues form, full of swing but with Venezuelan seal. "Maracaibo Mía" ("Maracaibo of mine"), in gaita de furro rhythm, is a tune that wants to give us a sight of the nowadays Maracaibo. And finally, "Guasa Influenciada" ("Influenced Guasa"), a tune that reinterprets a Venezuelan folk rhythm in 5 beats called guasa or merengue venezolano, but under the influence of the skeptic style of the Pagliuca-Mena brothers. In Silv's words "'El Templo de las Ideas' is a very reflective album. It's a lot about searching, searching for our language, for our identity. It's a sacred time-and-space. The Album is the Temple itself, where the Ideas are standing.".
