About the Album

Do You Still, composed by Ernst Reijseger, is featured on "Let It Shine", the forthcoming duo album from cellist Helen Gillet and mulit-reedist Jeff Coffin. Helen says of this track: "I first heard a Sitar player sit in at Fred Anderson's club near Chinatown in Chicago in 1998 and thought if sitar can do it, so can a cello right? Right. Soon after I had begun devouring recordings of jazz cellists and my path into improvisation was set. I love this track because it pays homage to a great teacher of mine, Dutch Jazz Cellist Ernst Reijseger. I've improvised this tune for years in lots of different instrumentations but never recorded it until now. The cello's role in the song is of a harmonic arpeggiated bowed accompaniment with the bow which morphs into live looping for the solo section. I have developed looping techniques over the years to sound as fluid and natural as possible in the context of improvisation and rhythmic and harmonic building. I am deeply interested in the transformative aspect of live loops coming in and out of improvisation in the most seamless way possible. The whole album "Let It Shine" is a spiritual meditation of collaborative melding of texture and timbre between Jeff Coffin's multiple instruments and the cello. I love how the bass flute and cello sing together on "Do You Still.""
