About the Album

Baltimore-based pianist, keyboardist and composer Lafayette Gilchrist is one of our favorites. The newest member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, he reconvenes his funk and go-go fueled nonet New Volcanoes for the acclaimed band’s first release in seven years. While the title captures the infectious, joyous, groove-heavy sound that New Volcanoes has honed over the last two decades, it’s also a plea for community during turbulent times. Gilchrist masterfully combines Afrobeat, funk, and creative jazz into a one of a kind sound. The track “Cut Through the Chase” is Gilchrist’s tribute to working class life. It is an intentionally upbeat funky celebration lifted by a burning West African groove and stellar soloing by trombonist Christian Hizon.

Tracks

Cut Through the Chase; Move with Love; Bamboozled; Basta; Baby Steps; Cross Pollination Aggregation.
