About the Album
Acclaimed Cuban-American pianist and composer Kemuel Roig is pleased to announce the release of his highly anticipated new album, "Dos Almas." This ambitious production, available May 23, 2025, is an intimate and deeply personal journey through nine captivating pieces, where the piano emerges as the sole and true protagonist. "Dos Almas" marks a return to Roig's roots, unashamedly exploring the emotional power of his instrument. The album interweaves reinterpretations of classics from the Cuban repertoire with the mastery of classicism, the richness of jazz, and other sounds that have defined his musical career. The first single, "Convergencia," a moving adaptation by Marcelino Guerra and Bienvenido J. Gutiérrez, was released on May 9, 2025, offering a first glimpse into the depth of this project. For Kemuel Roig, "Dos Almas" is a heartfelt statement, a reflection of his deepest inner self. "I recorded music that has a lot of meaning to me, works that have shaped my life over the years, by Cuban composers I appreciate and who have been fundamental to my story," shares Roig. The album is a tribute to his loved ones and his spirituality, with tracks like "Historia de Amor [Para Noemí]," "Kenneth [Heaven's Gift]," "Kendrick [Blessed Child]," and "Home" dedicated to his wife and children, and "The Almighty" reflecting his faith. Renowned musicographer Rosa Marquetti highlights that "Dos Almas" combines lyrical and emotional interpretations, both respectful and transgressive. Each track is a personal and universal journey, where Roig reinvents classics such as "Quiéreme Mucho" (by Gonzalo Roig) and "Alma con Alma" (by Juanito Márquez), allowing the piano to express emotion in its purest form. In "Almendra" (by Abelardo Valdés), Roig expands the expressive possibilities of classical danzón, highlighting its lyricism and the percussive prominence of the piano through jazz-inspired improvisations. Kemuel Roig career has been marked by a constant dialogue with diverse instrumental formats and collaborations with legends such as Al Di Meola, Arturo Sandoval, Ed Calle, Randy Brecker, and Chris Potter. His ability to back iconic voices such as Aymée Nuviola demonstrates his versatility and mastery. With "Dos Almas," Roig validates the need for an intimate dialogue between artist and instrument, inviting the listener to immerse themselves in a world of emotion, tradition, and experimentation. The album was recorded at the Herbert & Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center in Miami, FL, on February 11, 2024, using a Steinway & Sons Model D Artist Series and Earthworks high-definition microphones, ensuring exceptional sound quality.
