About the Album
CANONGE is an original composition that represents the intersection of my musical background—jazz improvisation, Haitian and Caribbean rhythmic influence, gospel vocabulary, and classical piano technique.
The title is a nod to Martinican pianist Mario Canonge. When I first wrote the melody, something about it immediately reminded me of his musical language. Michel Camilo has also been a major influence on my approach to virtuosity, rhythm, and energy at the piano.
As a Haitian-American pianist, I’m increasingly interested in allowing my Caribbean roots to exist naturally within my jazz language rather than treating them as something separate. CANONGE is one of the clearest examples of where that exploration is taking me.
