About the Album

Trumpeter/composer Sarah Wilson is boldly going where no musician has gone before: A creative world that is simultaneously inspired by European “new painting” as well as the New Orleans street brass band tradition. Her new recording, “Incandescence,” is informed by the large-scale oil painting works of Viennese artist Thomas Reinhold as heard through the horns and rhythms of her Brass Tonic band: alto saxophonist Kasey Knudsen, trombonist Mara Fox, guitarist John Schott, bassist Lisa Mezzacappa, and drummers Jon Arkin and Tim Bulkley. “Architecture in Space” was written when an artist residency brought Wilson to the State Gallery of Lower Austria. She wrote the piece in real time while responding to Reinhold’s art, and a meeting with the artist revealed that his own visual creations were inspired by John Coltrane. The result is a piece that shines with a memorable melody and irresistible groove.
