About the Album

"African Piano" is rooted in a groove from the indigenous musical bows used by Xhosa, Zulu and other tribal cultures in South Africa. The track also leans upon modal Coltrane expressionism. In a spine-chilling moment at the end, Buddy Wells’s saxophone harmonics reach back far in history, to the overtone singing of the Xhosa-speaking peoples and the bow music of the Khoi and San.
