Steven Kroon: In My Path

From world-renowned percussionist Steve Kroon comes In My Path. On his debut release as a leader, Kroon showcases his multitude of influences as he seamlessly mixes calypso, Brazilian, Latin, R&B and jazz.

Kroon has performed with many greats during his career, including stints with Aretha Franklin, Stanley Turrentine, Ron Carter, and Luther Vandross. "Bridges," a mere 36 seconds in length, lets you hear immediately why Kroon was chosen by this illustrious group of musicians as their timekeeper. Kroon not only keeps impeccable time but, much like Leon Parker, his playing comes from a very soulful place. The latter is the key ingredient to his success, allowing him to reach deep inside and connect with the music—a rare quality these days, when his ability could easily merit him to stand out front on any given song.

Kroon's choice to take this high road produces splendid results. "Sun Goddess" illustrates Kroon's ability to blend his solo into the body of the tune. Kroon has also chosen to surround himself with some very talented folks in Jon Lucien and Paulette McWilliams-vocals, David Sanchez-alto sax, and Ron Carter-bass. Jon Lucien, featured on "The Wind," and Paulette McWilliams on "Your Smile," show their vocal prowess with grace and ease. In addition to the track on which Ron Carter guests, Ruben Rodriguez lays down some serious bass lines that, along with Kroon's playing, hold this multi-layered CD together and the listener's feet firmly on the ground.

Each song is stylistically different than its predecessor, making this an eclectic, yet extremely pleasurable listening experience. Kroon is right on the mark with In My Path; simply a beautiful effort.
