Tweak: Hybrid Organics
A former composer of film scores, producer Cyril Boehler displays his ear for visual soundscapes and textures under the moniker Tweak. Hybrid Organics is a colorful and warm album melding, as the title suggests, organic instrumentation with electronically created grooves. Not one to shy away from the unconventional, Boehler manages to fit the deep, rich tones of an Alpine horn into his afro-beats and bossa rhythms on the opener, and also on "Harvest". Boehler shifts moods easily – the calculated dissonance of "Nocturne" fits in easily alongside the quirky, spy-themed jazz-swing of "Woodworm". For that soulful touch, Boehler makes use of smooth vocals to embellish the relaxed funk of tracks like "Blood of Trust" and "Weirdo". "Escapism" is another vocal track that exhibits a seductive, stripped down funk, embellished by Shoany White’s sensuous vocals. Boehler has a penchant for shuffling, syncopated beats but he softens and humanizes them by making them sound like the dusty breaks of a live jazz-funk band. Hybrid Organics is a well-rounded and multi-layered excursion into melodic downtempo grooves that draws on an eclectic musical palette for varied moods. Boehler’s skill lies in threading jazz, soul and funk into his musical playground using electronica’s genre-mashing tools.
