John Patitucci: Brooklyn
Patitucci si fa accompagnare da un super gruppo composto da Steve Cardenas e Adam Rogers alle chitarre elettriche e da un gigante come Brian Blade alla batteria. Una sottolineatura che non poniamo a caso. In Brooklyn infatti è proprio una certa intesa fra Patitucci e Blade a trasparire. Sezione rimica raffinata e implacabile impegnata anche al fianco di Shorter. "In 9-1881/The Search" e "Dugu Kamalemb" fanno iniziare l'album con un mood swingeggiante, uno scatto verso le gustose rotondità funk di "Band of Brothers," dove le chitarre marchiate Cardenas-Rogers firmano forse alcuni dei fraseggi più incisivi dell'intero album.
"Tinkle Tinkle," col suo walking e ampi spazi in cui l'occhio di bue si concentra di nuovo sulla sola sezione ritmica, regala ampi spazi di virtuosismo in una sorta di pirotecnico divertissement d'alto livello. Meno intrigano le atmosfere più riflessive di "Ugly Beauty," posta alla metà perfetta della scaletta quasi a fare da spartiacque, riflusso utile a caricare un'altra onda di musica nera: è infatti smaccatamente blues il ritorno di di "JLR," prima della lunga decompressione finale, in cui Patitucci resta solo con le sue corde in "Tensori." Bello ed elegante. Unica pecca, forse, l'eccessiva precisione e pulizia nei capitoli che più guardano alla tradizione black.
