As the ezz-thetics label has already released two of Ornette Coleman's Blue Note albums together on New York Is Now & Love Call Revisited, both recorded in April and May 1968, it was always in the cards that both volumes of At the Golden Circle Stockholm, recorded in December 1965, would not be far behind. Sure enough, here they are, both together on one disc with a running time of eighty minutes. That means this single disc includes all of the tracks that were on the two vinyl records first issued in 1966 but does not include alternate takes which were added to later Blue Note CD versions—no great loss, according to some aficionados. At The Golden Circle on 3rd and 4th December 1965, Coleman was joined by David Izenzon on double bass and Charles Moffett on drums, who had been together with him since late 1962. The three had already recorded a couple of trio albums in 1965—An Evening with Ornette Coleman (Polydor, 1967) and Who's Crazy (Atmosphere, 1979)—so sound played in and on each other's wavelengths. Compared to past and future quartets which had another horn alongside Coleman, in the trio he was the lone horn; as a result, Izenzon and Moffett were active beyond timekeeping, supporting Coleman and taking some of the pressure off him. Of the eight tracks, the only one on which Coleman does not play an excellent extended saxophone solo is "Snowflakes and Sunshine" on which he exhibited his new-found skills on trumpet and violin, with bass and drums playing flat- out throughout. As always, the ezz-thetics sound quality is second to none, a vast improvement compared to some versions. In addition, as with other live recordings on the label, the atmosphere of the venue is preserved, with no silences between tracks. A classic, heard at its best ever.
