Ikizukuri + Susana Santos Silva: Suicide Underground Orchid

Read "Suicide Underground Orchid" reviewed by John Sharpe

For its second album, the power trio Ikizukuri, comprising German saxophonist Julius Gabriel, Portuguese electric bassist Gonçalo Almeida and drummer Gustavo Costa, joins forces with trumpeter Susana Santos Silva for a brash 40-minute thrash blending free jazz, noise, metal and electronics. While the band's name refers to a gruesome strand of Japanese cuisine which entails seafood so fresh it is still alive, the shock and vitality are happily the only ingredients which inform the music. The album ...

Hearth: Melt

Read "Melt" reviewed by John Sharpe

Four of the most exciting young improvisers on the European scene assemble for the first time under the name Hearth. In a cosmopolitan roster overflowing with talents who each possess a distinctive individual voice, Amsterdam-based Argentinean reedplayer Ada Rave joins with the Copenhagen-domiciled Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler, Stockholm-located Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and Trondheim-resident Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen. While improv sessions often thrive on no-holds-barred expression, it really is the collective which is the star on Melt.

Solo Recordings for Non-Traditionalists

Read "Solo Recordings for Non-Traditionalists" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

On January 24, 1975, a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial concert grand piano was to be wheeled onto the stage of the Cologne Opera House. Instead, a rehearsal piano, smaller, beaten-up, and out of tune, was the only instrument available to then twenty-nine-year-old piano prodigy Keith Jarrett. The pianist was not in much better shape than the piano. In pain and wearing a back brace, he was sleep-deprived and had driven over three-hundred miles from Zürich. Jarrett threatened to cancel the concert ...

Torbjorn Zetterberg & Den Stora Fragan: Are You Happy ?

Read "Are You Happy ?" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Hedvig Mollestad: Ekhidna

Read "Ekhidna" reviewed by Gareth Thompson

In 2003, the English writer John Murray published his Booker Prize-listed novel Jazz Etc. It narrated the life and times of a female guitarist, the improbably named Fanny Golightly, from working class Cumbria. One observer in the story describes Golightly's playing thus: “I suppose jazz is the only name for it. It was as delirious as heavy metal, but far too complex to be any sort of rock. Most of the time she was playing as if she wanted to ...
