Tomorrow’s Warriors: The Sound of London, Part 1

Read "Tomorrow’s Warriors: The Sound of London, Part 1" reviewed by Russell Perry

jny: London has always been home to a thriving jazz scene. Several things distinguish that scene today—the gender and racial diversity of the players, their achievement at a young age and the wide range of musical influences from hip-hop, club sounds and the African and Caribbean diaspora. Much of this diversity has its roots in the innovative educational organization, Tomorrow's Warriors, whose work over the past thirty years has produced a crescendo of young artists coming of age today.

Here we are on the heels of Annus Horriblis still clinging to traditions both minuscule and grand like year end best of lists. So in the spirit of the season and survival, here's a 2020 playlist. Listen to these in this order or random play and perhaps the year in retrospect won't appear so damn bad. Nubya Garcia SourceConcord Jazz This one's the bomb. The whole damn trip. Nubya Garcia: Source

Read "Source" reviewed by Ian Patterson

London-born and raised she may be, but saxophonist-composer Nubya Garcia's music is pan-global in outlook, reflecting her Guyanese/Trinidadian heritage on one hand, and an openness to music in general, on the other. It should come as no surprise that her full-length debut is laced with Afro-Caribbean and South American rhythms, for Source is a personal proclamation--a musical passport of sorts. Equally, a streak of urban chic—marked by broken beats and dub atmospherics—colors these ten tracks. Yet for all its musical ...

Nubya Garcia: Source

Read "Source" reviewed by Chris May

Tenor saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia's first full-length album has been a long time coming—but the wait has been worth it. Source is a cracker and more than fulfills the weighty expectations that built up in anticipation of its arrival. It was back in 2017 that Garcia debuted with the EP Nubya's 5ive (Jazz Re:freshed) and since then she has been a leading light of the new London jazz scene. One of a triumvirate of tenor stars—the other ...

Moses Boyd: Dark Matter

Read "Dark Matter" reviewed by Chris May

As half of the ferocious semi-free duo Binker and Moses with tenor saxophonist Binker Golding, and with a string of guesting and producing credits of biblical proportions, drummer Moses Boyd is among the most prominent of the cohort of London rebels who are reinvigorating British jazz. He emerged, alongside Golding, in singer Zara McFarlane's band in 2015, going on to produce her sublime jazz / reggae set Arise (Brownswood, 2017). He has released three albums with Golding—Dem Ones (2015), Journey ...

Nubya Garcia at Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival 2019

Read "Nubya Garcia at Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival 2019" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Nubya Garcia Black Box Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival jny:Belfast, N. Ireland May 9, 2019 The tables and chairs in the back half of Black Box filled quickly, leaving a yawning open space in the front half of the room. A standing gig--those were the instructions from London saxophonist Nubya Garcia, no doubt seeking the intimacy, atmosphere, and perhaps even dancing, that a sit-down gig often negates. Most jazz-related gigs in Belfast tend to ...
