Joshua Redman: Trios Live
by Mark F. Turner
Upholding the legacy of his namesake, saxophonist Joshua Redman--son of the great Dewey Redman--has continued to develop as a leader in jazz since the 1990's. He's created a name as a consummate artist through rigorous work that's involved a previous directorship of SFJAZZ, constant tours and over a dozen recordings. At times criticized for not emulating his father's passion, recordings such as his 2013 jazz-with-strings project Walking Shadows (Nonesuch) resulted in a beautiful studio release that was at times unengaging. ...

Joshua Redman Quartet Musical Instrument Museum Phoenix, Arizona April 3, 2014 Saxophonist Joshua Redman played tribute to past tenor greats, putting his personal imprint on each chart, from Wayne Shorter's Infant Eyes" to Joe Henderson's Tetragon" and the sax standard, Oleo" by Sonny Rollins. Saxophonist Joshua Redman combines some really attractive virtues: deep jazz knowledge and formidable technique on his instrument. Combine this with a balanced but slightly assertive style that is a prime example of fluency and inventiveness, and you have a musician of such intelligence and energy, who is so adaptable, that he easily finds a way to make himself at home in any given musical surrounding. Nato in Ungheria, dopo aver frequentato il conservatorio di Györ e la Franz Listz Academy of Music, s'è trasferito negli Stati Uniti con una borsa di studio per frequentare i corsi alla Berklee ed è poi passato al New England Conservatory e al Thelonious ...

by Karl Ackermann
As a classically trained teen, Brad Mehldau was introduced to the music of Keith Jarrett setting him on the road to jazz. He did not abandon the classical genre and those influences were powerfully present in his first solo release Elegiac Cycle (1999). He has since written pieces for the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France and Carnegie Hall commissions for Anne Sofie von Otter and Renée Fleming respectively. Highway Rider is a two disc showcase of Mehldau's growth as both a composer ...
