David Sylvian: Manafon
by Nenad Georgievski
David Sylvian Manafon Samadhi Sound 2009
Singer David Sylvian has had such an unpredictable and diverse recording career that it is interesting to see what will come next. Over the years he has covered a lot of ground, from pop music to gentle, ambient soundscapes, prog rock and fiery, avant-garde experimentation. So it should come as no surprise that his eclectic muse has led him to a new sonic neighborhood with Manafon. ...

Many artists deliberately avoid taking risks, making changes instead opting for the safe, but David Sylvian is not one of them. British singer/songwriter David Sylvian isn't a jazzer by any stretch of the imagination, but from the earliest days of his post-Japan solo career he's enlisted a variety of jazz players--from trumpeters Kenny Wheeler and Mark Isham to pianist John Taylor, bassist Chris Minh Doky, and guitarists Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, David Torn, and Derek Bailey. He's also worked extensively with Neo Geo forefather/keyboardist Ryuichi Sakamoto, as well as avant/progressive artists like Can's Holger Czukay, King Crimson co-founder/guitarist Robert Fripp, and ...

The latest release by David Sylvian is actually a collection of personally commissioned remixes of material from his critically acclaimed 2003 album Blemish. I usually have my suspicions when it comes to remix or tribute projects. It is a rare occasion when someone does a fair remix or reconstruction of a tune, thus taking it to territories beyond the confines of dance music. Despite my prejudices and doubts, this is truly a great album.
Surprisingly, what's most amazing about it ...
