Jeremy Pelt: The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 2/His Muse

by Jack Bowers
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt's album, The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 2, is a hybrid: nearly one-half jazz quartet (quintet on one track), more than the other half quartet with strings. Strangely enough, the strings are nowhere listed on the album jacket, nor are Pelt's colleagues in his quartet. One has to read an accompanying press release from HighNote Records to learn that they are pianist Victor Gould, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart (with guitarist Chico Pinheiro added on the ...

by Angelo Leonardi
Delizioso.

by Angelo Leonardi

by Raul d'Gama Rose
The near falsetto vocals of Chico Pinheiro perfectly offset the voluptuous music that he has created on There's a Storm Inside. However narrow his vocal range, Pinheiro is a master storyteller and weaves his lines like an elaborate tapestry, a sort of patchwork quilt that tells the story his way. Pinheiro has a softness that seems to accelerate and retard his very breath, which increases the dramaturgy of his vocal gymnastics in both English and Portuguese, but more so in ...

by Mark F. Turner
There's A Storm Inside reaffirms Brazilian music as still one of the most romantic and vivacious genres in the world. While the rich lineage of enticing vocals and exotic rhythms remains intact, guitarist/vocalist Chico Pinheiro expands the tradition and infuses it with modernistic touches. A consummate artist, his voice is as sultry as Vinicius Cantuária, along with fret board and fingering magic that reaches the mastery of Romero Lubambo. The pristine sound and high production values are ...
Continue ReadingChico Pinheiro & Anthony Wilson: Nova

by Woodrow Wilkins
Dual guitars is the theme of Nova, by Chico Pinheiro and Anthony Wilson. The musicians and their album represent the merging of cultures: American and Brazilian.
Wilson, a New Yorker, is a Grammy-nominated guitarist who has recorded six solo albums since 1997. Among them is Power of Nine (Groove Note, 2006), which was in The New Yorker's roundup of the Top 10 jazz recordings of that year. Pinheiro, a native of São Paulo, has earned several ...
