Joe Syrian Motor City Jazz Octet: Secret Message

Read "Secret Message" reviewed by Jack Bowers

No fuss, no frills here, simply forty-seven or so minutes of generally bright and engaging straight-ahead jazz, stylishly performed by drummer Joe Syrian's admirable Detroit-based octet. This is music the group plays often, blending standards from the Great American Songbook with more recent themes by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Leon Russell and others. The congenial session opens with a pair of well-traveled standards--"Bye Bye Blackbird," and “Star Eyes"--and closes with two more- -"Night and ...

Joshua Weiner's Best Jazz Albums Of 2024

Read "Joshua Weiner's Best Jazz Albums Of 2024" reviewed by Joshua Weiner

Sweet reissues, new archival releases, and a truly new recording that is nevertheless a tribute to a genius musician of the 1950s and early 1960s... what can I say, I'm just an old-school kind of jazz fan! Also a vinyl listener, and the vast number of all-analogue, well-cut and well-pressed reissues of classic jazz albums coming out now make this a great time to collect records. Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts special music got me into jazz in the first ...

Doug MacDonald: Live at the Rancho Mirage Library

Read "Live at the Rancho Mirage Library" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

"Another damn'd thick, square book! Always scribble, scribble, scribble! Eh! Mr. Gibbon?" Well, maybe the Duke of Gloucester did (or did not say it) on the publication ofThe Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire, but something similar comes to mind when Doug McDonald's most recent recording comes to hand. “The SoCal guitarist has been at it for well over a half-century, and his recent (2022) Serenade to Highland Park was, in the words of Los Angeles jazz writer Kirk ...

Quartet Diminished: Deerand

Read "Quartet Diminished: Deerand" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Deerand is a Persian term which means “duration" of instrument's tones. Quartet Diminished was established in Iran in 2013 by guitarist Ehsan Sadigh. This is their fourth album, following Station Three (Hermes Records, 2021). Their music is stylistically diverse, drawing freely from contemporary jazz, art rock, and avant-garde music. The membership has been relatively stable. Sadigh (electric guitar) has had bandmates Soheil Peyghambar (woodwinds), Mazyar Younesi (piano, voice), and Rouzbeh Fadavi (drums) on most of the group's albums. ...

Patricia Brennan at The Jazz Gallery

Read "Patricia Brennan at The Jazz Gallery" reviewed by Matty Bannond

Patricia Brennan The Jazz Gallery New York, NYDecember 6, 2024 One string quartet, a grand piano, a double bass and a drum kit were squished onto the cozy stage at The Jazz Gallery, but vibraphonist Patricia Brennan still had enough room to boogie. Even in Midtown Manhattan, where every square inch carries a hefty premium, there was space for movement behind the bandleader's hardware. And there were movements about space, too. “Suite of ...

Jakob Bro, Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Thomas Morgan, Andrew Cyrille: Taking Turns

Read "Taking Turns" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Despite being recorded a decade ago, this album from Danish guitarist Jakob Bro sounds as fresh and contemporary as any 2024 release. Taking Turns was originally recorded in New York in 2014; the album release was delayed by ECM Records, who initially preferred to highlight Bro's trio work. The postponement proves fortuitous, as Bro's melodic compositions create expansive soundscapes that invite his all-star sextet to explore and improvise around his delicately rendered musical themes. Bro composed the seven ...
