Several Silent Ways & More

Read "Several Silent Ways & More" reviewed by Bob Osborne

The arrival of a new Anthony Wilson album with his interpretation of Joe Zawinul's “In A Silent Way" lead me to dig out other versions--a live rendition by Weather Report plus the two versions from the The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions box set release by Miles Davis. Zawinul's haunting melody is the centrepiece of all four versions on the show. In addition, some re-released music from John Hicks, and new releases from across the wide world of jazz.

Sophie Agnel: Song (Sophie Agnel)

Read "Song (Sophie Agnel)" reviewed by John Sharpe

With Song, Sophie Agnel confirms her place as one of the most stimulating and inventive pianists on the European improvising scheme. While she has long been a formidable partner to the likes of John Butcher, John Edwards and Steve Noble, here she underscores her worth as a soloist. But that is not quite the entire story. What gives the session its distinctive flavor is the framing device: a taped voice--that of soprano Mauricette Millot singing a 1958 ...

Sly and the Family Stone: The First Family: Live At Winchester Cathedral 1967

Read "The First Family: Live At Winchester Cathedral 1967" reviewed by Doug Collette

The glossy silver foil finish inside and outside the covers of The First Family: Live at Winchester Cathedral 1967 to some degree belies the sound quality of the music inside. But the assiduous effort applied to the sonics of the original recordings--by Sly and The Family Stone's first manager Rich Romanello--is right in line with the meticulously annotated contents of the enclosed fifty-two page booklet. With the many period photos as thought-provoking as the carefully annotated prose, the ...

Why Is Japan a Jazz Paradise? Part 2—From Sake to Soul: Jazz Musicians and Their Love for Japan

Read "Why Is Japan a Jazz Paradise? Part 2—From Sake to Soul: Jazz Musicians and Their Love for Japan" reviewed by Atzko Kohashi

Part 1 | Part 2 In May 2025 Japan welcomed an estimated 3.693 million visitors, marking a surge in global fascination with the country--up 125% (more than double!) compared to a decade ago. Many come for the exquisite Japanese cuisine, the tranquil atmosphere of temples and shrines, the ultra-modern buzz of Tokyo, or the soothing beauty of rural landscapes. But long before this boom, our proud jazz legends--the predecessors with finely tuned ears and sensitive souls--had ...

Mike Clark: Standard Deviations

Read "Standard Deviations" reviewed by Paul Rauch

Bringing new life to jazz standards is a longtime tradition in jazz, whether it be on the bandstand or in the studio. With their latest Sunnyside recording, Standard Deviations, the iconic drummer Mike Clark and Los Angeles-based tenor saxophonist Michael Zilber venture there once again, following Mike Drop, their 2021 Sunnyside release. The result is a swinging session of jazz pearls in quartet mode, with pianist Joe Davis and bassist Alex Claffey joining in the fun. Clark, for ...

Tantilla's Majestic Grip on Richmond's Scene

Read "Tantilla's Majestic Grip on Richmond's Scene" reviewed by Troy Hoffman

The “South's most beautiful ballroom," Tantilla Gardens, at 3817 W. Broad Street, in Richmond, Virginia, was an acoustically treated structure built by the Byrd Theatre Group in 1933. The building stretched a block long, featuring nightly dancing, along with the Nation's greatest dance orchestras. This all took place on the second floor, atop Tiny Town Bowling Alleys, the “South's most modern bowling plant." Tantilla Gardens averaged at $1.50 entry fee per night ($30.00 in today's money) and had a capacity ...

Back Door: Vienna Breakdown: The Recordings 1971-1976

Read "Vienna Breakdown: The Recordings 1971-1976" reviewed by Geno Thackara

It was a whole different world back then, me lad. A person could not simply plug in a couple gizmos and record an album in their bedroom--well, not a very good-sounding one at any rate. It was fairly rare for an early-'70s combo to wing it on their own (or at least with a friendly venue owner's help) without company or label support. Those who know the name Back Door, though, know that their whole career was practically built on ...
