Joel Futterman: Innervoice
by John Sharpe
Veteran pianist Joel Futterman may be best known for his long association with saxophonist Kidd Jordan and drummer Alvin Fielder, but he is also a prolific purveyor of solo sessions. Innervoice, recorded in July 2024, is a worthy addition to a tally that also includes gems like the monumental five CD box set Creation Series (NoBusiness, 2021), among many others. Like much of Futterman's output, it was birthed entirely in the moment, with no subsequent edits. That suggests stupendous concentration, ...

by Tony Ozuna
"Satchmo! Pops! Mr. Louis! Mr. Armstrong!" Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash. Cameras ahead. All he could do was smile in reply, with his big grin, and keep on moving through the crowd. Behind him, his entourage followed along trepidly. The Louis Armstrong band, or in their own terms, the OJ Express: the Original Jazz Express. But when Louis was feeling down, he would refer to the group as the Old Jazz Express, because the jazz that they made ...
Continue ReadingThe Great American Songbook Goes Legit—Thanks to Michael Feinstein
by Joan Merrill
A mutual friend introduced them and before the meeting was over, Michael Feinstein had a job. He was to sort out lyricist Ira Gershwin's extensive record collection. At the time, 1976, Feinstein was 20 and Gershwin 80. Perhaps the age difference was the basis for their friendship. Gershwin enjoyed the enthusiasm of the young pianist and Feinstein was inspired by the experience and wisdom of the older man. Whatever the case, the men became friends and ...

by John Sharpe
British saxophonist John Butcher cultivates a network of like-minded collaborators around the world, with whom he seeks to connect on an occasional to regular basis. Although only formed in May 2022, the trio with American drummer Chris Corsano and Swiss guitarist Florian Stoffner must be among the most potent combinations. Affirmation comes from the nine tracks included on The Glass Changes Shape that were culled from a live performance at Loft in Cologne in September 2023. Each man ...

by Jack Bowers
As befits someone who has spent years in the pop/rock arena performing with name acts from David Bowie, Radiohead and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Duran Duran, Bruce Springsteen, Laurie Anderson and many others, composer and saxophonist Stan Harrison sees jazz through an extremely wide lens. While there are a few moments of clean straight-ahead blowing on Harrrison's album Some Poor Soul Has a Fire, there are many others that emulate more closely his kinship to and respect for the kind ...
