Interesting Albums from the Past Few Months

Read "Interesting Albums from the Past Few Months" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

Here are five worthwhile jazz albums released in the past few months. Billy Mohler The Eternal Contagious Music2025 Bassist Billy Mohler leads a fiery quartet on this album rooted in the sound of his authoritative bass mixing with Jeff Parker's guitar and Devin Daniels' alto saxophone. The music, built on simple vamps, dances and throbs easily with alto and guitar soulfully flying over the rumbling power of the bass and drums. ...

Lex Korten: Canopy

Read "Canopy" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

Lex Koeten's Canopy is a project of different musical styles swirled together in a dizzying stew. It sounds discordant on first listen but ultimately this collection of jumpy prog freakouts, delicate ballads and misty ambience hangs together as parts of the same whole. Korten creates all this out of a simple lineup of keyboards, voice, alto sax, guitar, and drums. The opening “Oasis Walking" feels like the work of an adventurous singer-songwriter like Sarah McLaughlin or Beth Orton ...

Kirk Knuffke: Window

Read "Window" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

Cornet player Kirk Knuffke seems to work with a different combination of musicians on every recording he makes. This time out, he is joined by Stomu Takeishi on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums in a bare bones trio session that covers a lot of musical ground. The album consists of thirteen short tracks that hopscotch between various styles, with the three musicians thoroughly engaged with each other. “Choose" is a bit of sly funk with Knuffke pushing ...
