Singer, producer, and composer Steve Tyrell was born in Texas and grew up in Houston's 5th Ward. If you were paying attention, you may wonder who sang “The Way You Look Tonight" on the soundtrack to Steve Martin’s Father Of The Bride and its sequel.

By now, the secret is out. Steve Tyrell has released three albums in the last four years and we now hear him singing on television and radio almost as often as we’d like. For a guy who started out in the late 1960s at the tender age of sixteen, he ...

Steve Tyrell: This Time Of The Year

Read "This Time Of The Year" reviewed by Jim Santella

It's the time of year for floor-length, sequined gowns, colorful neckties, spiked punchbowls, endless dancing, and repeated trips to the refreshment bar. Singer Steve Tyrell wants to make sure everyone has a good time. For his party, he's invited a few special guests we can certainly appreciate. Tyrell's loose vocal interpretations set everyone at ease. His recording, while running under 40 minutes, serves as the ultimate holiday celebration. Bringing in Clark Terry's mumbles and pleasant trumpet interludes was a stroke ...

Singing with a slightly raspy tone, sort of a combination of Ray Charles and Hoagy Carmichael, Tyrell's versions of this set of classic standards are pleasant enough, but certainly not compelling. It isn't because the album producers haven't tried. They rounded ...

Steve Tyrell: Standard Time

Read "Standard Time" reviewed by Jim Santella

Recalling the years when Basie and Ellington reigned, Steve Tyrell sings standards alongside big band arrangements, strings, and in small ensemble format. His interpretation of these familiar standards certainly brings back the memories. Tyrell's singing voice, gritty and expressive, somewhat resembles the timeless delivery of Tony Bennett. Preferring to walk the straight and narrow by singing these standards as written, Tyrell relies on his accompaniment for improvisation. It's an all-star group, and their participation on this project pays dividends. Tyrell's ...
