pianoAlbum Description
You Can See: The Best of Donald Vega on Resonance features 15 tracks from the pianist's two albums recorded for the label, Spiritual Nature and With Respect to Monty (a tribute to the Jamaican piano great Monty Alexander). Featured players on many of the tracks include bass icon Christian McBride, drummer Lewis Nash violin virtuoso Christian Howes. Vega currently performs with his own trio and Ron Carter's Golden Striker Trio. Classically-trained in his native Nicaragua, Vega emigrated to Los Angeles at age 14 and began learning the language of jazz from mentor and drum icon Billy Higgins at The World Stage and later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He earned a Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music and subsequently studied at Juilliard with Kenny Barron. Donald Vega’s personal heroes include Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Monty Alexander, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Erroll Garner, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, and Mulgrew Miller, and he draws upon those influences, while developing his own sound.
