Album Description

We Are Home is the first full-ensemble album led by Toronto bassist and composer Josh Cohen. It features Jeremy Ledbetter on piano and keyboards, Rob Christian on woodwinds, Lucian Gray on guitar, Mateo Mancuso on drums, and Cohen on six-string electric bass.

The eight original compositions were conceived as band music from the beginning, rather than as extensions of Cohen’s earlier solo-bass work. The writing moves through asymmetrical forms, layered meters, tightly organized ensemble passages, open solo sections, jazz fusion, and electronic influences. “Supernueve” is built around a nine-bar theme and shifting rhythmic layers; “Five on the Floor” places an EDM-influenced pulse inside 5/4; and “Next Steps” sets 5/8 against 6/8 before moving through flute, guitar, and bass solos.

Much of the music was written with Ledbetter, Christian, Gray, and Mancuso specifically in mind. Christian’s saxophones, flute, and EWI broaden the ensemble beyond a standard quintet sound, while the bass functions as part of the composition rather than remaining at the centre of every arrangement.

Recorded at RC Sound in Toronto, We Are Home takes its title from Cohen’s changing relationship to place, family, and musical community after living in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Supported by the Ontario Arts Council, the album will be released on September 25, 2026.
