UltraSound was a contemporary jazz orchestra/big band based in Bristol in the mid 1990s. Led by saxophonist Mark McKergow, the band wrote and recorded this CD as a project based around the International Festival of the Sea, Bristol, May 1996. A key theme of the festival was John Cabot's voyage aboard the Matthew from Bristol to the new world five hundred years before. This work includes a set of 'Matthew Variations' along with other nautically inspired works by band members. The music was premiered at the Festival and subsequently performed at venues including London's South Bank Centre (Purcell Room) and Glastonbury Festival 1997.
