Album Description

There's This. Early January 2024, I made the trip to Vancouver to start what would be a new recording project, I wanted to work with my old friend Rebecca Jenkins and newer pal, Paul Pigat. Rebecca and I have recorded so many times together and in fact, we made a duet project some years back entitled, Ernesto and Delilah. I am a massive fan of hers and was so delighted to have that beautiful voice and breath taking interpretations on this new recording. Paul, a year earlier, brought me to Vancouver to perform a handful of shows with him and the experience musically and otherwise, was inspiring. Somewhere tucked in the right hemisphere of my brain, was the concept of having friends overdub in Toronto on top of this trio. I heard a pedal steel (Michael Eckert) covering some harmony with a vibraphone (Michael Davidson). A small brass section ( Rebecca Hennessy and Tom Richards) augmented with a bass clarinet ( Jacob Gorzhaltsan) and a violin (William Lamoureux). On selected songs, Davide Direnzo supplied percussion parts. Two songs had appeared on some of my older recordings but the rest were written for There's This. Because I knew Rebecca would be singing this material, I had a picture of what the emotional curve could be. She invested her time in knowing as much about the... characters in the tunes as possible. I was not certain if my answers to her rightful questions were of much help but it did make me more mindful in the writing .This is a luxury item! Paul sat a meter from me as we recorded live with Rebecca. The thought was, if a guitar went low, a guitar went high , if one played time then another provided space. Shadows and light. We had a blast orchestrating our parts on these three sessions and were not short on ideas. Another luxury item! After the recordings in rainy Vancouver, the masters went to Toronto, where I worked on the arrangements for the compositions. The cast of musicians were very familiar to me and similar to Rebecca and Paul in that they were strongly in my musical mind. I was hoping the players would feel Rebecca, Paul and I were in the room with them, so their parts were recorded live. Luxury item! I am deeply indebted to all the musicians listed above and especially Rebecca Jenkins who gave everything to these songs. Thank you to these great engineers. Sean Holowaychuk, Chris Stinger, Darren McGill and mastering friend, João Carvalho My family! Oh my family..I am lucky beyond belief.
