Album Description
Vision Of Sound’s latest release The Occasional Trio Live In Berlin features The Occasional Trio in concert at the Schlot Jazz Club on two separate evenings. Already known for their stunning sense of dynamics, interplay, lyrical creativity, swing and free improvisation, The Occasional Trio are on top form throughout these recordings, aided by the new addition of Kay Lübke on drums. Indeed many of the tracks were recorded at their first live performance together on 27th November 2018, a testimony to the Trio’s outstanding musicianship, led by Simon’s endless passion for harmonic and melodic adventure. Simon writes: “Concerts allow you to stretch out and take risks on the spur of the moment in front of a live audience, and that’s exactly where I believe music becomes exciting, where it breathes and where it truly comes to life. On these recordings, you’ll hear Kay’s propulsive spontaneity, Roland’s phenomenal drive and sensitivity, and me interpreting these works in a new, challenging and refreshing way. You’ll also hear the audiences who certainly enjoyed their role in pushing us further. Thank you to them!” In addition to live versions of many compositions recorded on Opening Lines (VOSCD-001), their new album features 4 new works: ‘Blues in Fink’, a mid-tempo Ellington-ish blues to open; ‘Carousel’, a lyrical up-tempo tune about the cycles of life; ‘Sweedad’s Pastry’, a bop-type blues dedicated to bassist Mike Harris, opening the second set; and ‘Every Moment of Every Day’, a short, lush Mingus-type ballad. The atmosphere of the concerts has been captured beautifully in these recordings, giving the listener a front-row seat in the Schlot Jazz Club, and you will certainly be swept up by the enthusiasm not only of the musicians but also the attentive audiences, who pushed The Occasional Trio to new heights on those two special evenings. Available from 18th October 2019.
