Album Description

On The Moment, Cathy Segal-Garcia is joined by her current band, an intriguing group consisting of Gary Fukushima on electric piano, guitarist Jeff Richman, tenor-saxophonist Chuck Manning and Brad Dutz on percussion. The lack of both bass and drums gives the ensembles a lot of extra space. The instrumentation keeps all of the musicians on their toes and forces them to play in different ways even when performing a standard. This consistently colorful set starts off with a swinging and fun version of “Putting On The Ritz” and includes Cathy’s adaptation of a Ralph Towner tune, a warm rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s “Star Crossed Lovers,” and the soulful and surprisingly funky “Twenty Men Waiting.” Other highlights include the haunting lullaby “Sleep In Peace” (which has some mildly spooky electric piano), an exuberantly swinging John Abercrombie tune (“Goin’ On Down To Hippityville”) and an intriguing and witty “Free Improv.” The close communication between the musicians and the joyful spirit featured throughout this set make this one of Cathy Segal-Garcia’s happiest and most memorable recordings.
