vocalsAlbum Description
No other music does heartbreak and loneliness like jazz. It is the soundtrack to late nights blurring into early mornings, of resolution turning to regret, that unique feeling of fatalism that sets in with your sixth or eighth or tenth whiskey.
It’s that mood that Gregg Arthur, one of Australia’s finest jazz vocalists, beautifully evokes on his new album, The Ballad Collection. Featuring a number of never-before-released recordings, this is a beautiful collection of timeless songs performed by a singer at the top of his game.
This album includes some of the best-loved jazz standards ever written, such as ‘Autumn in New York’, ‘Misty’, ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ and ‘Dindi’, written by a Who’s Who of songwriters: Errol Garner, Vernon Duke, Antônio Carlos Jobim and more.
Also featured on The Ballad Collection are four of Gregg Arthur’s own compositions: ‘Last Call’ and ‘When I Think Of You’ perfectly captures that late-night feeling, while ‘You With Me’ is a sultry bossa nova number that demands a slow-dance in some dimly-lit, no-name tropical bar. And ‘On a Singapore Night’ is an instant classic, a vision of the perfect end to the perfect day that sounds like it could be the theme song to the next James Bond film.
The cover of The Ballad Collection album is a painting by Gregg, perfectly capturing both the mood of this collection of songs and the effortless style and charm of this brilliant singer.
