A duo album with Fox on soprano saxophone. Throughout ten years of friendship and professional collaboration, continual discussion of producing an album together eventually came to fruition with this recording. A six-week motorcycle trip through South India in 2009 was the catalyst for our long-intended collaboration. The album is an expression of that time in India. While the landscape, its people, culture, and music all served as inspiration, it was the time spent together as friends and our understanding of each other as people that is truly represented in the music.
When musicians perform together they don’t merely play music – they communicate. Simply being in someone’s company is a way of rehearsing. Having spent six weeks together meant we became utterly tuned in to each other. Once in the studio, we could anticipate the other’s next move and, combined with an understanding of each other’s aesthetic preferences, we knew exactly what direction the music was going in. This personal connection is the essence of the sound produced, of what manifested musically.
Our friendship is a balancing act based on two very different personalities. Constantly challenging each other, one pushes the other to think about things differently. This tension has preserved our relationship and helped create this album. We had no deadlines and so could debate – at times dispute – subtleties and explore our musical preferences. The acoustic, minimalistic sound of the grand piano and soprano saxophone was a conscious decision, born out of a finely, perhaps even precariously, balanced compromise of ideas.
