Runway is the debut album by Airport, a four-piece instrumental ensemble led by guitarist Gio Guido. The band
features Jun Masaoka on drums, Hiroshi Ichimura on bass, and Yasumasa Kumagai on piano and keyboards — a
seasoned and expressive lineup. Special guest Miho Ohashi appears on violin in select tracks, adding a lyrical, soaring
layer to the band's sound.
Rooted in jazz fusion, the album is a cinematic and emotionally charged journey across nine original compositions. From
groove-driven improvisation to lyrical ballads and world-inspired textures, Runway showcases the quartet’s range,
depth, and cohesive sound.
The title track “Runway” opens with momentum and elegance, blending intricate guitar work, deep rhythm section
grooves, and Miho Ohashi’s expressive violin — evoking the sensation of lift-off and new beginnings. “View From The
Horizon” leans into cinematic and world-music influences, creating an expansive, visual atmosphere that moves
beyond traditional jazz borders.
“Les Amants (Sonata N.3)” stands out as a poetic, emotionally resonant piece with flamenco-like intensity — not
traditional flamenco, but rich with that same kind of passionate, evocative playing. Guitar and violin intertwine in a
dramatic and lyrical dialogue.
“Nostalgica” is a reflective 6/8 jazz ballad performed on classical guitar, marrying delicate phrasing with jazz harmony
— intimate and timeless. The quartet returns to high-energy interplay on tracks like “Dig It” and “Dry Pinecone,” while
“Into the Mind of Crime” explores darker, more suspenseful textures. “Romantic Balcony Bar” and “Rejoicing” close the
album with a sense of emotional resolution and uplift.
Runway presents Airport not just as jazz musicians, but as sonic storytellers — crossing borders between genres with
taste, mastery, and a shared musical vision. Fans of Pat Metheny, Snarky Puppy, Chick Corea Elektric Band, and Ralph
Towner will find much to discover in this striking debut.
