San Francisco percussionist Ami Molinelli is the "Plus One" joining forces with Brazilian 7-string guitar masters Rogerio Souza & Edinho Gerber ("Duo Violao") on this exhilarating cross-cultural exploration of samba & choro & the two styles' co-evolution. Building on their visionary 2019 album "Historia do Choro," the group returns on "Raizes ..." to highlight the essential role of women and Afro-Brazilian culture in samba & choro, with contributions from vocalists Mayte Correa, Claudia Villela, & Dill Costa; clarinetists Whatson Cardoso & Harvey Wainapel; & father-and-son bandolim virtuosos Ronaldo & Tiago. The foundational composer Pixinguinha is represented with four exuberant selections; the group provides several originals & offers their version of "Pelo Telefone," the first ever recorded samba. "Raizes ..." is thoroughly contemporary while grounded in the rich musical history of Brazil.
