As the world around us continues to grow ever more complex, Bennett Paster looked to music as an antidote: something to settle, to soothe, to smooth the wrinkles of our modern lives. His latest album, Radiance, reflects the results of his search. It is an exuberant expression of the jazz piano trio tradition: music at the crossroads of beauty and groove. Synthesizing elements of soul jazz, boogaloo, blues and funk, with singable melodies and a touch of modern harmony, the music is satisfyingly listenable while still substantial and genuine. On Radiance, Paster’s all-original compositions run the gamut from understated to joyous. His fluent pianism, distinctive musical voice, and effortless melodicism ring true, as he and his classic trio of piano, bass, and drums reinvent and carry the jazz tradition into the future.
