Scottish guitarist Kevin MacKenzie, organist Peter Johnstone and drummer Doug Hough have been playing together as PRIME long enough to develop the kind of easy, conversational rapport that makes this music sound effortless. Play Standards, their second album, arrives five years on from their 2021 debut and finds the trio doing exactly what the title suggests, playing standards, but doing so a fresh approach and new arrangements.

The nine tracks draw from across the American songbook and beyond, taking in Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Arlen and Cy Coleman alongside jazz originals by John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. The arrangements, by MacKenzie and Johnstone, wear their care lightly. These are not radical reinventions but they are genuine readings, each song reconsidered rather than simply replayed, with space given to the melody and to the particular warmth that the Hammond organ brings to this kind of material.

Recorded by Gus Stirrat at Solas Sound and mixed and mastered by MacKenzie, Play Standards is released on 24 July 2026 on Laundry Room Music, timed to coincide with a PRIME performance at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival.
