Album Description

This recording is the third installment documenting our collaborations that occurred around the turn of the century. We were first introduced in 1999 by Steve Loewy. Already a fan of Giancarlo's, he had recently become aware of my trio with bassist Steve Zerlin and drummer Leland Nakamura and thought we would be a good match. Giancarlo joined us at our regular Monday night session on U St. at State of the Union, resulting in the live recording "Deconstruction!" (Pentaflowers CDPIA 050). We met up again the following summer of 2000 at the trio's new residence, the fabled One Step Down. We recorded over two nights, expanding the group to include saxophonist Jesse Meman both nights, and (double) double bassist Vattel Cherry on the second night. Selections from that weekend were released as "Post-Deconstruction" (Cadence Jazz Records CJR 1143). The selection process for the tracks on that album was a difficult one, as both the label and I felt that there was more than enough good music for a single CD. The performances presented here are taken from that same weekend of June 9 & 10, 2000 at the One Step. I hope that they not only offer a glimpse into what was a joyous, freewheeling weekend of creative improvised music, but that they might also serve as a capstone to our incredibly inspiring and productive encounters.
