Adhyâropa Records UK is thrilled to announce the release of Phoenix Vol. 1 (ÂRUK0006), the highly anticipated third album from the extraordinary jazz saxophonist and composer Rob Cope. Featuring an exceptional lineup of British jazz luminaries Liam Noble, Laurence Cottle, and Paul Clarvis, Phoenix Vol. 1 marks a bold new chapter in Rob’s musical journey. The album introduces Rob’s first recorded use of tenor saxophone and showcases a significant evolution in his distinctive compositional voice.
Rob describes Phoenix Vol. 1 as “the compositional story of the birth and rebirth of our musical identity as musicians as we grow older.” He reflects, “I am fascinated by the evolution of musicians as they release music. Phoenix Vol. 1 is an exploration of rebirth—writing music that is true to myself, yet evolving significantly from my previous works.”
For several years, Rob has been performing monthly gigs in his hometown of Sandbach, creating new music for audiences of all ages and refining his ability to take listeners on a dynamic musical journey. “The aim has been to compose music that resonates with my community,” he explains. “This approach has shaped my compositional process by providing a framework that led to a significant development in my musical voice. Through repeated performances, I share this musical conversation with the audience, allowing the compositions to develop and be reborn over time.”
Rob also hopes his work is a source of inspiration for his brilliant young students, many of whom attend his concerts. “The rebirth of music applies not only to our own compositions but also to the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next,” he says. At the heart of the album is Rob’s unique compositional voice; each piece an original creation deeply influenced by artists like Ben Wendel and Chris Potter. The compositions on Phoenix Vol. 1 are more open and spacious than his previous work, emphasizing the interaction of musical motifs among band members. Rob’s approach often uses simple, repeated motifs that evolve throughout each piece as they are shared and transformed within the band. This method invites both performers and listeners to focus on the unfolding journey of each composition and its musical themes.
