Featuring 4 classic albums from the celebrated jazz guitarist ‘September Man’ (1974), ‘Guitars’ (1975), Babel (1980), ‘End of August’ (1982), and the unreleased album : ‘Solo Bremen 1979 & 1982’. Deluxe Packaging / 28-page booklet. On November 24th, Warner Music France will release a 5CD box set entitled ‘Selected Works 1974-1982’, honoring jazzman Philip Catherine. This box set includes 4 classic albums from the celebrated guitarist : ‘September Man’ (1974), ‘Guitars’ (1975), ‘Babel’ (1980), ‘End of August’ (1982) and the previously unreleased ‘Solo Bremen 1979 & 1982’ album. These albums will be available inside as 5 CD vinyl replicas, with their original vinyl artwork faithfully reproduced, except ‘Solo Bremen’ which will be illustrated by a painting by artist Gilles Fiszman. Thanks to his legendary guitar touch, guitarist Philip Catherine is considered as one of the most influent artists of the European jazz scene of the last fifty years. After joining several bands in the late 60’s and early 70's, including Jean-Luc Ponty’s Experience, he became a celebrated composer in 1974 and 1975 with the ‘September Man’ and ‘Guitars’ albums. Including modern classics such as Nairam and Homecomings, these two records, featuring the Belgian guitarist, bass player John Lee, drummer Gerry Brown, producer Marc Moulin and musicians Charlie Mariano, Jasper Van’t Hof and Palle Mikkelborg, mixed Django Reinhardt’s heritage with a taste for experimentation (Nineteen Seventy Fourths, Noburl…). The striking ‘September Man’ and ‘Guitars’ opened new perspectives for Philip Catherine, who went along collaborating with Larry Coryell and Chet Baker. The fluid and adventurous ‘Babel’ and ‘End of August’ proved that Catherine was still an innovator in the early 80's with the moving and labyrinthine melodies of Babel, Petit Nicolas and Spirale, featuring ace sidemen such as André Ceccarelli, Jannick Top and Jean-Claude Petit (on ‘Babel), Charlie Mariano, Nicolas Fiszman, Trilok Gurtu and Toots Thielemans on ‘End of August’. Philip Catherine fans will be surprised by the previously unreleased ‘Solo Bremen 1979 & 1982’ album, featuring 11 tracks recorded for the German radio station Radio Bremen during two distinct sessions in 1979 and 82. Catherine plays all the instruments on those tracks (acoustic, fretless and electric guitars, electric bass…). This album includes early versions of some tracks later published on ‘Babel’ and ‘End of August’ (Babel, Petit Nicolas…) and also the previously unreleased Every Day, D Tune, Rue du Sel, Rianne and To Larry, dedicated to Larry Coryell. It also features tributes to Chet Baker (My Funny Valentine), Charlie Mariano (Crystal Bells), Hermeto Pascoal (Nem Um Talvez) and Michael Gibbs (Tunnel Of Love). The album last bonus track is the 1998 «Etude pour Peter S», dedicated to Peter Schulze, who produced this record. The box set will also contain a 28-page booklet featuring never-seen before pictures and liner notes by Philip Catherine fellow musicians and producers : Jean-Luc Ponty, Aldo Romano, Gerry Brown, John Lee, Palle Mikkelborg, Sylvain Luc, Andy Summers, Michael Cuscuna, Michael Gibbs, Frédéric Devreese, Peter Schulze... A moving tribute to this unique jazzman who will celebrate his 75th birthday on October 27th. The newly remastered ‘September Man’ and ‘Guitars’ albums (from the original analog master tapes) will also be available on October 27th.
