Once It Was Out It Was Out For Many Eyes To See is the debut album by MUEL, a Vienna- and Graz-based experimental ensemble, released in 2026 on schnibbi records. The album explores the intersections of contemporary jazz, avant-garde, noise, psychedelic music, and experimental rock, creating a distinctive sonic landscape that challenges conventional genre boundaries.
Across eight tracks, MUEL develops a restless and atmospheric musical language characterized by unconventional structures, dynamic contrasts, intricate rhythms, dissonant textures, and moments of intense improvisational energy. The ensemble combines guitars, trumpet, double bass, drums, electronics, vocals, and additional instrumental elements to create a sound that moves between abstract experimentation, dark psychedelia, and expressive contemporary jazz.
The compositions explore themes of alienation, psychological tension, societal structures, human vulnerability, and existential uncertainty. Rather than following traditional song forms, the music embraces unpredictability and collective interaction, allowing contrasting sonic ideas to emerge and evolve.
Tracks such as "Sirens," "Fire Spinning People," "Kuşların Konferansı," and the two-part "Men In Black Trench Coats Shoot At The Sky" demonstrate the band's diverse approach to composition and sound. The title track and "Famine And Flies" further emphasize the album's unsettling atmosphere and experimental character.
Recorded at rösselmühle studios in Graz between December 2024 and September 2025, the album was recorded by Samuel Williams, mixed by Samuel Williams and Anderson Klaue, and mastered by Doug Henderson at micro-moose in Berlin.
With its combination of improvisational sensibility, avant-garde experimentation, and genre-defying composition, MUEL presents a compelling debut that will appeal to listeners interested in adventurous contemporary jazz, free improvisation, experimental music, and the European underground scene.
