Album Description

This special retrospective release in the Jazz in Meanjin series features a 2014 live set from the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra (EMO), a unique jazz orchestra in Meanjin that exclusively features performances of works by local composers. In a world of flashy jazz big bands and blaring brass, EMO aims to present something new that could only take root in this city. After many years of wowing jazz fans with their original big band repertoire, the band has amassed over 100 pieces specifically written with EMO in mind. EMO recorded this journey through local jazz at what has quickly grown to be the go-to Brisbane venue for original improvised music, JMI Live. Many of the pieces recorded were debuted at this very venue, so it is only fitting to bring them back to their spiritual home to be put down on record. With stalwart Meanjin composers and arrangers such as Andrew Garton, Rafael Karlen, Joshua Hatcher and Wade Gregory featured, the live recording sessions proved to be two great nights of sophisticated yet energetic musicianship from some of the most exciting performers around.
