Palma Groove Project is the collaborative project of London-born musician, songwriter and producer Orlando Lund and New York-born soul singer Sheela Gathright. Founded in 2012, the project blends funk, soul and jazz with a strong emphasis on groove, musicianship and songcraft. II is the second Palma Groove Project album featuring Gathright on lead vocals throughout, and marks the culmination of more than a decade of songwriting collaboration between Gathright and Lund (whose credits also include The Big Cheese All Stars and Spacecake International). The album melds funk, jazz, space-rock, pop, lo-fi textures and harmony-rich soul, both classic and contemporary, delivering a cohesive listening experience rather than just a collection of standalone tracks. The record places Gathright’s charismatic, expressive voice front and centre, supported by lush vocal harmonies, tightly constructed arrangements, and grooving instrumentation. Lund serves as musical director and chief songwriter, providing all instrumentation, arrangements and production, as well as backing vocals and lyrics. His approach draws on old-school soul and funk traditions while presenting them through the distinctive stylistic lens of Palma Groove Project. Gathright, daughter of enigmatic 1970s soul artist Willie Wright, brings warmth, humour and emotional clarity to the material. Her lyrics inhabit the groove with humanity and wit, exploring different themes with her fresh and authoritative voice.
