A new intergenerational quartet teams up improvising veterans with emerging talents, bringing fresh energy to the improvisational landscape.

Some musical languages don’t disappear—they lie dormant, waiting for the right constellation of bodies to reactivate them.

For more than three decades, guitarist, oudist, and improviser Mustafa Stefan Dill has worked at the unstable borderlands between flamenco, Middle Eastern modal traditions, free jazz, and ecstatic sonic risk, forging a practice rooted less in genre than in transmission: of memory, intensity, and cultural residue through spontaneous form. With Love Unfold The Moon, Dill returns to the acoustic terrain that first defined his early European work—not as nostalgia or revival, but as excavation.

If Love Unfold The Sun channeled amplified collision through metal, jazz, and Middle Eastern rupture, Love Unfold The Moon moves differently: toward wood, string, skin, breath, and the raw architecture of collective improvisation. Hidden Promises In Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging is not a “comeback” to Dill’s earlier post-flamenco language so much as a re-entry into its unresolved future.

Built as an intergenerational quartet, Love Unfold The Moon brings Dill together with bassist Ben Wright—himself deeply embedded in improvised music lineage as both a formidable player and son of pioneering improviser Jack Wright—alongside violinist Ash Mattia (Berklee College of Music) and drummer Thor Rodriguez (CalArts). Rather than positioning youth and experience as opposition, the ensemble collapses them into a single living structure: accumulated practice meeting emergent instinct, historical vocabulary meeting unprescribed possibility.

Recorded in one day just a week after the group’s inaugural performance, Hidden Promises In Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging unfolds as a single extended composition, subtly segmented across three movements that trace shifts from guitar to oud and back again. The work privileges immediacy over polish, process over product—documenting not perfection, but encounter. Its architecture is fluid yet tensile, moving through post-flamenco fracture, modal drift, and free improvisational combustion without settling into any one system for long.

This is music less interested in fusion than in coexistence: traditions not blended into sameness, but held in friction long enough to generate new forms.

Dill’s earlier recordings—Warning Clothed in Bright Robes of Dawn (1994) and Sangre Del Rio (1997)—mapped out a radical personal syntax that earned recognition across European experimental circuits, from FMP’s Total Music Meeting to Nickelsdorf and beyond. But Love Unfold The Moon feels less like a continuation than a reconfiguration: a renewed acoustic practice shaped by time, lineage, and the presence of younger collaborators whose contributions are not ornamental, but transformative.

Where many legacy artists look backward to consolidate identity, Dill instead uses return as a method for destabilization. Hidden Promises In Joined Terrains, Apex Emerging asks what becomes possible when foundational vocabularies are reopened—not preserved, but challenged by new energies.

The answer is a work of deep listening and volatile trust: an album where improvisation functions as both inheritance and proposition.

“This project brings me back to the acoustic language that shaped my early solo work in Europe, but with new voices pushing it forward,” said Dill. “I’ve wanted to extend that vision into a group setting for a long time, but it’s only with the gifts of Ben, Ash, and Thor that a group context became possible. Ben and I have our years in the trenches, and Ash and Thor bring a brilliant fresh outlook, along with some remarkably wise musical decisions.
