Herd TrioKoko Jazz Club Helsinki, FinlandMarch 29, 2012 With their emergence onto the Finnish scene in 2009 in the national competition for the Nordic Jazz Comets award (won that year by the Icelandic Ingemar Andersen Quartet) the Herd trio have been making waves in northern waters ever since. This gig, however, in the newly opened premises of the Koko Jazz Club--now across Helsinki's very short 'Long Bridge' and behind Hakaniemi Square--was their first in ...

The first duet release from one half of the Oddyssey Quartet, with David Pate (Sam Rivers Rivbea Orchestra) and guitarist and composer Rex Shepherd (No End of Now). Seeing Sound features the two playing an improvised set, creating palpable musical textures using subtle harmonic and melodic ideas and developing them into intuitive conversations, “seeing” the sound of two like minds speaking with one another. “Playing duets with David Pate is like having a meaningful conversation with a good friend while ...

Jazz Guitarist Tom Guarna Leads a Dream-Team Quartet–Featuring Keyboardist Jon Cowherd, Bassist John Patitucci and Drummer Brian Blade–on "The Wishing Stones"

Tom Guarna—a guitarist whom DownBeat magazine has praised for the “emotion, tension, surprise and passion” in his music—assembled what he calls “a dream team” for The Wishing Stones, his seventh album as a leader, and his first for Destiny Records. The album, to be released on November 10, 2017, features Guarna leading a quartet with keyboardist Jon Cowherd, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, each player a renowned virtuoso and band leader in his own right. Guarna’s previous album, ...

Experimental Guitarist Rex Shepherd Releases Three Albums Digitally

Experimental Guitarist Rex Shepherd Releases Three Albums Digitally

Source: Glass Onyon PR - William James

Guitarist Rex Shepherd has released three albums digitally: Ohio, Sonority and Duets. Combining elements of jazz improvisation and harmony with an approach to guitar playing heavily influenced by diverse players such as Jim Hall, Robin Trower, Fred Frith, and sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, Rex Shepherd has forged a niche for himself with original music that typically lies somewhere just outside the usual genre labels but is still music that is approachable. Says Rex, “This new music was recorded in my ...

Ralph Burns: Swingin' Herd

Ralph Burns: Swingin' Herd

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I'm on a bit of a Ralph Burns tear—listening to both the recordings I've owned for some time and grabbing those that I'm unearthing through a deep dive into his discography. What makes Burns special is that he could write beautifully for strings on one album and then tear your heart out with his charts for a big band date on the next. Case in point: Woody Herman's New Swingin' Herman Herd recorded in March 1960 for the Crown label. ...

The Swinging Shepherds

The Swinging Shepherds

In the final installment of my three-part series on off-the-radar jazz supergroups of the 1950s, I'm turning today to Buddy Collette and His Swinging Shepherds—a West Coast quartet of superb flutists that regrettably recorded only two albums for Mercury. Both albums were arranged by Pete Rugolo, who pulled out all the stops in terms of writing complexity, since the four flutists in question were studio pros who could handle anything: Buddy Collette and Paul Horn (fl), Harry Klee (pic,fl) and ...

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - How I Go (2011)

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - How I Go (2011)

Source: Something Else!

By Fred Phillips For a guy that once told me in an interview that he couldn't seem to make everyone happy with his mix of blues and rock, Kenny Wayne Shepherd has done pretty well for himself. Coming out of the gate as a 16-year-old kid schooled in the Stevie Ray Vaughan style of blues on his 1995 debut Ledbetter Heights, Shepherd met with mixed feelings in the blues community. There was no doubt that he had the chops, but ...

Source: Roadrunner Records

On Wednesday, November 10th, Kenny Wayne Shepherd will be joining The Roots for a special Hendrix-themed sit-in on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Kenny will be playing the same white Fender Stratocaster guitar that Jimi Hendrix played on the morning of August 18, 1969 at the Woodstock Festival. It's the same instrument on which Hendrix played “The Star Spangled Banner," the recording of which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009. Kenny's performance with The Roots ...
