Album Description
A vivid document of a one-night musical encounter, Happening in Buenos Aires captures Ricci, Pablo Sanguinetti, Bruno Migotto, and Oscar Giunta shaping the music in real time. With no full-band rehearsal beforehand, the four musicians gave the performance the immediacy, risk, and responsiveness of a true live happening. Several pieces in the set are connected to Ricci’s So Amor repertoire, heard here in rawer, more spontaneous live form alongside additional standards and reinterpretations.
The album opens in classic jazz territory with Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo,” followed by “Night & Day” and “Just Friends,” establishing the
group’s conversational feel from the start. Ricci then moves into his original “Simply Love” and “Old Old Blues,” his English-language adaptation of “Desconfío,” Norberto “Pappo” Napolitano’s 1972 Argentine blues-rock classic, newly expanded with Ricci’s own bridge and arrangement.
The center of the album leans deeply into Latin American song. Argentine pianist and arranger Pablo Sanguinetti turns the landmark tango “Naranjo en Flor” into a jazz waltz, placing Argentine identity at the heart of the set, while “Quiet Nights (Corcovado)” widens the frame toward bossa nova. Brazilian bassist Bruno Migotto, a São Paulo jazz veteran whose credits include Chico Pinheiro’s Grammy-nominated City of Dreams, brings warmth and fluidity to the cross-cultural setting. Oscar Giunta, a major figure in Argentine jazz whose career includes work with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci, and Paquito D’Rivera, gives the music spontaneous rhythmic authority.
The first single, “What A Wonderful World,” is one of the album’s emotional centers. A childhood favorite revisited through the lens of
fatherhood, the performance brings tenderness, vulnerability, and emotional depth to the familiar classic. “Besame Mucho,” the second single, shifts from its romantic bolero origins into an earthier, cinematic live performance, with Ricci’s blues-rock guitar voice at the center.
The album then takes an unexpected turn with Radiohead’s “Creep” [Explicit], reinterpreted in an intimate live jazz setting. The performance
turns tension and alienation into a slow burn that builds from near-classical restraint to an explosive emotional peak before the set closes with “My One & Only Love” and “There Will Never Be Another You.”
With Happening in Buenos Aires, Ricci returns to his birthplace not simply to document a concert, but to capture a musical meeting point
between the cities, styles, musicians, and personal history that have shaped his sound.
