Album Description

In 2014 Novelli moved to Dominican Republic and became immersed in the jazz scene in Santo Domingo. Promoter Fernando Rodriquez de Mondesert booked Peter into the premier clubs in Santo Domingo, backed with musicians such as Pengbian Sang and Edgar Molina (RetroJazz) and Guy Frometa (Juan Luis Guerra, Leni Stern, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Paquito de Rivera, Chichí Peralta) and American Corey Allen (now directing university music program at UNPHU in S.D. and formally with Chuck Mangione, Manhattan Transfer, Kevin Mahogany and others). It was a productive period, with Peter absorbing not only new yet old rhythms and melodies, but an entire culture. Novelli was interested in the connections of Dominican, Haitian and Cuban music to New Orleans (and its funk, Second Line and Zydeco grooves). During the haitian revolution circa 1800 many haitians migrated to New Orleans and Louisiana, forming the Creole culture. And, for many years there was a daily ferry from Havana to New Orleans. This led to Novelli writing ten new instrumental songs, and recording the basic tracks over a few days in Santo Domingo. The project was sidelined for a few years during Covid and finally mixed and mastered. Novelli continues to live in Dominican Republic.
