DEVIANCE is proud to present our debut album, Forbidden Experiments; a post-bop, vaguely-modal, experimental play on Teo Macero's approach to creation. Out on bandcamp on October 2, 2026, and on all other platforms October 16, 2026.

We've semi-ironically described ourselves as "the Beastie Boys of post-bop”; the mantra was coined not because this is jazz rap (nor would we consider this frat jazz, per se), but rather because of the fact that we spent most of the past two months in the studio goofing off and making music that we find really exciting. It’s a mindset, really.

Forbidden Experiments is a 39-minute, nine-track record that heavily borrows from the Electric Miles/Teo Macero tradition while incorporating a more chaotic studio approach inspired by the post-punk producer Martin Hannett. The performances remain rooted in jazz, but the production treats (abuses, even) the studio as an instrument. The result turned into some unholy blend that has been compressed even beyond Rudy Van Gelder's preferences.

DEVIANCE consists of the core duo of Noah Lefgren and Ashton Van Der Veur. Lefgren is a two-time music school dropout (having completed a single semester at both Utah State University and Utah Valley University) and professional pop producer and general sound-tinkerer; he predominantly contributed the bass, keys, guitar, and the occasional simple drum part. Van Der Veur graduated from Utah Valley University studying drumming, and is the wizard behind the set on this project. He also performed a solid amount of the keyboard parts and some guitars.

Additional contributions were made by John Lefgren (Noah's grandpa, whose voice was sampled on the first and last tracks), Drew Holland on woodwinds, and Trent Mac Bain on Pokemon cards and some small vocal parts.

DEVIANCE's Forbidden Experiments contains multitudes; from the traditional electric jazz instruments to tape loops inspired by the 1983 classic piece of cinema "Strange Brew"; copious amounts of analog echo to Pokemon cards; the jazz establishment is not prepared for what DEVIANCE has created.
