Nashville-born saxophonist/composer Rahsaan Barber (b. 1980), on faculty at the U. of North Carolina/Chapel Hill since 2020, delivers his 6th album as a leader in the company of his simpatico working band--Matt Endahl, p; Kevin Beardsley, b; Jonathan Hunt, d--plus the New Orleans guitarist Ted Ludwig. Just days before the "Eternal" session, Barber received the painful news of his wife's miscarriage & nearly canceled the date. Instead, despite his not having finished writing all the songs & though the band had had only one rehearsal, Barber went ahead with the recording, where his band "allowed me to be in a place that became therapeutic for me, life-affirming." Rahsaan took much inspiration from '90s jazz, particularly Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, & Branford Marsalis, & also offers a treatment of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On."
