Album Description

The best new music often comes from the fortunate timely union and reunion of master musicians. The Ernst Bier - Mack Goldsbury Quartet with Herb Robertson is made up of players whose musical paths have been crisscrossing for over two decades. They have traveled virtually every musical avenue, street, path and back alley that traverses the landscape of 20th century music, and have been intimately involved with music and musicians that have left their mark on the latter part of the 20th century. The music on this CD reflects the influences of bop, swing, blues, avant-garde, contemporary classic, while casting a light onto the virgin grounds of the 21st century. The album was recorded in the summer of '98, directly after Herb's joining the group, and immediately following a week-long gig in the A Trane, Berlin's top jazz club. The week was the necessary warm-up for the recording of music that requires group understanding and commitment. The band's approach to the music is communal, and Goldsbury, Robertson, Möbus, and Schuller all contribute compositions.
