Renowned Rijeka jazz musician, saxophonist Denis Razumovic Razz, celebrates 30 years of his work, aptly described by music journalist and critic Davor Hrvoj: "Thirty years of pure improvisation, or 'living by the ear.'" And Hrvoj's words are not to be taken lightly, as proven by his own four decades in jazz journalism, during which he interviewed just about everyone, on several occasions: from Sonny Rollins to Ornette Coleman. Denis Razz has won many awards and played with countless musicians, such as Herb Geller and Giovanni Maier, signing four albums as leader: In Umbra, For Believers Only, Port to Port to Port and Urban Minority. However, his latest studio work, Discrepancies in Blue, has been released a few days ago courtesy of Dallas Records, Croatia, and is already being lauded as his greatest work from any standpoint, be it composition or performance. The album brings forth fresh, fearless music, as well as a unique cross-section of the history of jazz music from Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus onwards. In truth, Razz's music is necessarily contemporary, uncompromising in every idea, but completely imbued with swing. The album emerged as a result of Denis Razz's contemplation on the formation of his musical taste and the meaning behind his musical style, including the impact of sonic images conveyed through his performances. He wished to comprehend the delicate mechanisms which, through music, influence the creation of "stolen moments" during performance. Perhaps in line with Oliver Nelson's explorations on Blues and the Abstract Truth, Razz said the following about his own work: "I'm dedicating these eight compositions to the phenomenon of the blues. I'm offering the opportunity for listeners to immerse themselves in the dark, irregular and asymmetrical crevices in the deepest depths of the blues."
