Mark Kramer plays acoustic piano, upright and sampled bass, acoustic drums and additional sampled exotic instruments. Because this is so different in direction than most else Mark has done, a fictitious group name "THE BREAKOUT LEAGUE" was created. This might also help differentiate this KRAMER from the others (including the Mark Kramer Trio) on streaming platforms. This has little to do with monetization, just attribution and artists named KRAMER who use porn titles. .

Album Description

The theme of this collection: We rarely are in conscious contact with the unseen dimensions which animate us. But it is quite possible. Many jazz musicians playing in ensemble, and listening deeply and without tension get it. So, how is it that a solitary multi-instrumentalist musician might be so graced? As described, "Most of these tracks start out as nearly total improvisations at the piano. To do so is just a matter of getting out of the way, suspending judgement, listening as deeply and broadly as possible to the actual vibrations. Motifs, tempi, meters, harmonies, voice leading etc, just appear. Leaving space for interactions with over-dubbed instruments is critical; When it's time to overdub the bass, then the drums, nearly identical inner conditions are required. The closer the conditions are to here and now, the more it is like playing in an ensemble. Put another way it is similar to recording in isolation booths with others on headphones. These interactions in the here and now can be heard pretty clearly in the track entitled BEYOND REALITY. This story started at the bass with a simple bass line in forward motion and then retrograde (technically together called the GROUND) both accented rhythmically with mallets added latter. Without boring you to death, the tunes are akin to the Reality of Breathing. In that tune it continues mostly throughout the piece as a metaphor for the cycles in ordinary life to which we habituate, but keep us alive. What happens on top of this habituation are nearly indescribable "miracles" or shocks peaking through. A short modern swing section is intentionally placed so as to help us remember that the now dismissed and forgotten life support is on hold, but nevertheless is worthy of memory. At the very end, the GROUND reappears now but as the central FIGURE. The tempo is increased to underscore that it has always been the most indispensable, yet undervalued, element of our STORY. Designed to overwhelm ordinary sensory perception, these visualizations, unlike those of Spotify or other "music visualizers [MVs}" are actually a composite multitrack video which intentionally edits up to 5 distinct MVs according to mood of the music. In addition, the WAV file is transformed into a MIDI performance which is visualized in up to 5 different ways. There is nothing quite like this available in 2025, but you can bet with AI it will be soon, if not already.
