Album Description
Album Concept - Badlands
Badlands is a suite of six compositions (four originals plus one by Paul Motian and one by Neil Young) performed by Eli Hasson’s quartet: trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. The music was refined in live performance before being taken into the studio, giving the recording the feel of a collective language already lived-in and evolving.
The album embraces fragility and surprise. Instead of polished surfaces, it values the moment where sound threatens to collapse but continues - the breath, the silence, the sudden surge of collective energy. This approach reflects the influence of improvisers like Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, and more recently - Jakob Bro and Tord Gustavsen - who understood that space and vulnerability are as musical as notes.
The result is not a collection of tracks but a single arc, a concept album that unfolds as one journey across shifting landscapes.
A Personal Note
This music was written between 2023 and 2024, during some of the darkest months I've experienced living in Israel. The feeling of chaos, the scale of suffering around me, the frustration of watching leadership fail the people it was supposed to protect - all of this found its way into the compositions.
The suite is bookended by Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Bring Them Home" - a piece I've dedicated to the displaced: in Gaza, in Ukraine, and in war zones across the world. It's a small gesture toward the hope that they might one day find their way back to the lives they knew.
