Album Description

The new full-length album called Archipelago Sea Tales was released internationally on 9th of July 2021 by the Finnish jazz label Flame Jazz Records. The compositions feature stories from the most beautiful Archipelago in the world. The record has tones from the grim dystopian all the way to the beautiful set of colors that the Archipelago represents. Internationally acclaimed Jussi Fredriksson Trio’s new album Archipelago Sea Tales tells a bleak but beautiful set of stories from the most beautiful Archipelago in the world. During the pandemic, pianist Jussi Fredriksson wrote a new repertoire for his trio, drawing inspiration from Archipelagic romanticism to the natural demise of the Archipelago Sea. The topical Archipelago Sea Tales and its songs were conceived in Aspö, Nauvo, Bränskär, Gullkrona and in other various islands of the outer archipelago. The album tells about the current grim state of the Baltic Sea and on the other hand, about the beautiful hue of colors that it radiates. Dead Sea, Käkkärämänty, Splatter, Swan Love, Red Ochre, and other compositions got their initial spark from the hue of colors that the Archipelago represents, which Fredriksson in his mind connects to different chords and scales. – I associate chords and scales strongly as colors. It has a name - it’s some form of synesthesia, I think. I decided to write the new album trying to find connections between colors and scales. The archipelago is full of amazing colors, which surely hastened the process overall. One can find red soil, greenish blue, grey, white, brown, light yellow and other hues as well. The spectrum of colors varies from the darkest gloom to sparkling light splashes, Fredriksson says. – The third song Käkkärämänty (a ‘skewed pine’) is a musical landscape in a-flat major. The scale in question represents brown for me, with certain hues of greenish sprigs. I sometimes feel like being asymmetrical and skewed, so composing on the subject felt very natural. Baltic Sea, and especially the environmental problems surrounding it, is heard in Fredriksson’s music. The first single, Dead Sea, is a requiem for the most beautiful Archipelago in the world. – We all can see for ourselves that the Sea is not doing well. We are killing an important piece of the most beautiful Finland. Clean archipelago now only exists in our memories, the composer laments on his thoughts behind the song. Fredriksson also wrote a waltz which is dedicated to the second home of the pianist in Korpo. Korpo Waltz is additionally the theme song to the all-new Archipelago Sea Jazz concert series, which Fredriksson has been involved with from the get-go. Released during midsummer’s solstice, the sparkling Splatter is a refreshing musical scenery from the most beautiful Archipelago in the world. Splashes of the sea, and the endless hue of colors which represent the song, will take the listener on an intriguing sea adventure, in which waves of melodies lead the way towards a light: the dock. Since 2014, Fredriksson has played with bassist Jori Huhtala and drummer Mika Kallio. The warm-sounding piano trio paints dark musical pictures, where less is more. – As I compose, I hear Jori and Mika playing in my head. It helps me to do transitions, which feel natural for us. Playing music with them is easy, and we arranged some of the songs together. Archipelago Sea Tales is the third album that Flame Jazz Records has put out during 2021. The album release concerts will be heard at Jazz-Espa on 28th of July and at the Baltic Sea Day festivities on 26th of August. “Jussi Fredriksson Trio represents a higher state of group playing, where instead of three highly skilled individuals there exists only one uniform organism. Three players conceive one state of mind and thought. It’s pretty awesome to listen to.“ – Soundi “The session, which is both intensive and sensitive, is fine tuned to the maximum and requires a lot from other players. Bassist Jori Huhtala and Drummer Mika Kallio have to listen with big ears and shape with tender hands.” – Keskisuomalainen
